What is Google Analytics?

googlepartnerbadge.jpgGoogle Analytics is free a Website Analytics package that analyses the traffic to your Website. Google Analytics should play a vital role in how you assess the success of your Website and any digital marketing you undertake. It can tell you many things about how your Website is being used. For example Google Analytics can tell you:

  • how many people visit your Website
  • What they like and don’t like
  • Which pages they leave on
  • Where is your traffic coming from
  • How long visitors stay on your Website
It is installed by placing some code in the background of every page that you want to track and is provided by Google.

‘Hits’ means very little

A common mistake when looking at Google Analytics is to think in terms of hits. When you understand what Google Analytics is perhaps from attending one of our Google Analytics Training Courses, you will realise that the term “hits” is very outdated in terms of Website Analytics. Many older packages that are similar to Google Analytics report hits. A hit is counted every time a file is requested by a browser to load a page. This means that every image loaded onto a page counts as a hit. One visit to a site can cause literally 100’s of hits

What else can Google Analytics offer?

Google Analytics can provide hundreds of reports that tell you exactly where people click on your Website and which traffic is leading to sales or enquiries. It is a large subject but before you can learn more, you obviously need to know what Google Analytics is as a starting place.
